Sel Vitri translates from Latin to "Glass Gall," which is made of bitter, salty impurities in glassmaking from crude sand.

Often made of potassium or sodium sulfates and chlorides, it floats to the top as a scum, or sinks to the bottom as a sludge in the melt.
