The Vault-Tec Corporation was a company contracted by the United States government before the Great War to design and produce the vault system, a vast network of complex bomb and research shelters.
The Vault Tec logo is art-deco, which was a popular art-style in the 30's - 40's. Chances are the original inspiration is a lot older than a video game company.
