The original user of this symbol brought the symbol to prominence after gaining high ranks on KnowYourMeme and Escapist Magazine as well as gaining high numbers of views on their threads on KYM, EM, and Encyclopedia Dramatica. This combined with their sharp criticism against moderators and administrators on these sites and ultimately being banned from said sites, led to the symbol becoming well-known as a symbol of rebellion against unethical Internet moderators and administrators.
