Uppsala

Discovered near a cathedral in Uppsala, Sweden, this marking has been interpreted two different ways.

Since it was found on a tomb slab, it could be a symbol that identified the interred person by family. On the other hand, it could also be a stonemason's mark. During the Middle Ages, individual craftsmen often placed a personal symbol on building blocks as a form of signature, which also let them know how much they were owed in terms of wages for the project.
