The Congo Free State or the Independent State of the Congo was a former African colonial rule, private property of King Leopold II of Belgium, whose boundaries coincide with the current Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congo was privately managed by King Leopold between 1885 and 1908, when the territory was ceded to Belgium under the name Belgian Congo between 1908 and 1960, which became independent under the name of Democratic Republic of Congo.
