American Atheists

American Atheists

Founded in 1963, American Atheists is a major player in the ongoing battle to separate religious teachings from government proceedings.

The roots of this organization can be traced to two landmark court cases in North America: Abington School District v. Schempp and Murray v. Curlett, which addressed the issues of Bible reading and prayer recitation in American public schools. The design of the symbol calls to mind electrons swirling around the nucleus of an atom, emphasizing the atheist mentality of elevating knowledge and reason above blind faith. Interestingly, the bottom of the symbol’s vertical loop is purposely left incomplete. This symbolizes the fact that there are still questions about life and existence that have not been answered, but may be answered in the fullness of time.
