Ensō

Ensō

The Ensō is a simple calligraphic design originating from Zen Buddhism.

No two Ensō are exactly alike. While they always take the form of a circle, enso are typically drawn in a single brushstroke without specific planning, and physically completing the shape is not the primary focus. Both the circular shape of the enso and the method by which it is created are connected to its symbolic meaning; the concept of eternity and the state of enlightenment. The act of creating the enso is used as a meditation technique and represents the minimalist aesthetic and mindset so central to Zen philosophy.
