In the alchemical tradition, phosphorus is strongly associated with the element of fire. The latter is traditionally represented by an upwards-pointing triangle, and the same symbolism is used here.

Interestingly, the use of this symbol actually predates the discovery of phosphorus as its own element in the 17th century, so technically it designates a chemical, not alchemical, concept.
