Shou

This symbol, whose name can also be spelled as "chou", is representative of longevity (long life), an overriding theme in traditional Chinese culture.

The shou ideogram can be found on many objects associated with China, including scrolls, textiles, ceramics and even as architectural decorations. The design itself is based on a peach pit and is associated with the god Shou Hsing, who governs longevity.

There is also a tradition in Chinese culture of peaches themselves being the fruits of immortality, thus adding further symbolic significance to the shou ideogram.
