Pyrophorus (alchemy)

An 18th century chemical symbol indicating pyrophorus.

The term "pyrophorus" refers to a pulverized substance, typically metals, that glow with light when heated to a certain temperature. This effect is probably due to the ability of pulverized material to absorb a high degree of oxygen, thus charging the fire.
