The Religious Society of Friends (or Quakers) was established in the mid-17th century in England by George Fox, Margaret Fell, and others. The Quaker star dates from the late 19th century and was widely used to identify non-combatant organizations set up by individual Quakers to give aid in time of war. In the 20th and 21st centuries it has sometimes been modified for use by other Quaker organisations, most notably the Quaker United Nations Office. The version shown here has the star turned through 45 degrees, and a white dove superimposed.
