In the Harry Potter novels, Slytherin is one of the four school houses that students can be placed in when they arrive at Hogwarts. Named for Salazar Slytherin, one of the original medieval founders of the school, its colors are green and silver and its heraldic device is a serpent. The defining traits of members of Slytherin House are ambition, cunning and shrewdness.
