Sudarshan Chakra

The Sudarshan Chakra is a spinning disk like weapon that has 108 saw-like edges. It is said to be the weapon of the Hindu god Lord Vishnu.

As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu has four hands in which he holds a lotus and Mace (Gadaa) on the front two hands, and a conch shell on the left rear hand. The Sudarshan Chakra is held by him in his right rear hand.

In one of the four Vedas, the Rigveda, the chakra represents the wheel of time, and is the fierce form of Lord Vishnu to destroy an enemy.

The word itself is derived from two Sanskrit words, namely ‘Su’ meaning auspicious or good, and ‘Darshan’, meaning vision. Chakra means a wheel.

In the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, Lord Krishna, a form of Lord Vishnu used this weapon, to kill a member of enemy.

The Sudarshan Chakra is said to be created by Vishwakarma, the creator of gods, who made the sun shine less for his daughter. He created the Pushpak Vimaana (the aerial vehicle), Shiva’s Trishul and Sudarshan Chakra from the leftover dust.

There are many more mythological stories related to the Chakra. However, its existence is confirmed by the presence of various coins, like the tribal Vrishni silver coin.

In Vedic Astrology, Sudarshan Chakra is a pattern of drawing the Vedic horoscope, in which the three kundlis (Lagna, Chandra, Surya) are drawn in circular forms. The outermost circle is Surya and the innermost is Lagna (Rashi).
