Individual members of The Religious Society of Friends (or Quakers) established non-combatant organisations to give aid in times of war, particularly the two World Wars. The most well known are the Friends' Ambulance Unit (FAU) and the Friends' Relief Service (FRS). Various units served worldwide and were made up both of Quakers and non-Quakers. They were identified by means of the Quaker star which originated in the late 19th century.
